The Top 10 things for students to do in Sydney

The Top 10 things for students to do in Sydney

While studying in Sydney you certainly need to focus on the goal of getting the best results possible. But a little relaxation, entertainment and exercise will help you do a great job when you’re “hitting the books”.

Use the ideas here as a springboard to making the most of your time while you are in Sydney. And then when you’re done, head back home to unwind in the chill out zone or the rooftop BBQ area at Studio 8 Residences, Ryde.

Enjoy the peace of the Australian natural environment

One great example is the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. With a distance of 6 km one way, we suggest walkers allow 2-3 hours to enjoy this magnificent experience if you’re just walking, but really a whole day is nice, so that you can enjoy a swim along the way. It’s suitable for most fitness levels (although not suitable for wheelchairs), and there are drinking fountains at each beach along the way.

The Bondi to Coogee walk is the perfect way to do a spot of whale watching during the winter months, and just south of MacKenzie’s Point you can observe 2000-year-old Aboriginal rock carvings.

Check out Sydney’s music scene

While studying in Sydney it’s a “must do” to visit the Sydney Opera House. Monitor the Events page to catch performances in a range of expressions including opera (of course), cabaret and dance.

Find out what’s happening all across Sydney, and near to Studio 8 Residences at Ryde, with the Live Events search.

Or bookmark the City of Sydney’s Events calendar for everything from Jazz and Soul to First Nations, Brazilian, Opera and Swing.

The Art Gallery of NSW

One of the world’s leading art museums, The Art Gallery of NSW welcomes over one million visitors a year to enjoy the Gallery’s collection of Australian, Aboriginal, European, Asian and contemporary art. Located within beautiful parklands overlooking Sydney Harbour and only 15 minutes walk from the city centre. Admission to the Gallery is free, as are the permanent galleries and most exhibitions and events.

The Museum of Contemporary Art

Experience the latest art and ideas from contemporary Australian and international artists. Visit the Museum’s What’s on page to stay up to date with events and exhibits at the MCA.

The MCA Collection contains over 4000 works by Australian artists, with the work continuing since 1989. The Museum maintains a priority of including works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists.

First Draft at Woolloomooloo

Critical, ambitious and experimental, First Draft is an artist-led organisation supported by the City of Sydney and the New South Wales Government.

And because it is artist-led, First Draft is able to cheer on risk-takers and encourage artists’ ambitions in a professional setting. Fostering diversity and experimentation, First Draft offers a dynamic contribution to the local and global community.

Fancy some comedy?

A moveable feast, with new talent evolving every weekend, you can be part of the audience or get up on stage.

Check out the Sydney Comedy Club’s Stand Up Comedy shows at Luna Park, Riverside Theatres Parramatta & The Entrance Lake House on the Central Coast.

Or if you’re feeling brave, take yourself to one of Sydney’s Open Mic nights – there are plenty of venues where you can try your hand at stealing the show! The Open Mic Sydney app offers a reliable, comprehensive list of Sydney Area open mics.

Catch the big names in sport

Aussies love their sport, and while studying in Sydney you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved, whether you like to be in the crowd or on the field.

Swimming is huge, both as a spectator sport and for the millions of Australians who hit the pool on a regular basis. Enjoy a workout in the pool at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre, only a short distance from the popular international student accommodation at Studio 8 Residences.

Don’t miss events at Sydney’s Olympic Park, where you can catch basketball, Rugby League, Australian Rules, Tennis, and more.

And stay in touch with Sydney’s other sporting events here, where you will find events you can participate in such as Park Run and Archery, and catch the once-in-a-lifetime moments watching the Pro Surf Series, the Socceroos’ games, or the rowing.
